Rediscovering My Culinary Skills: A Stroke Survivor’s Journey with Hello Fresh

December 6, 2023

In a recent heartfelt moment, my wife observed a noticeable improvement in my cooking skills since we started using Hello Fresh. This observation holds a special significance for me. Before my stroke, I took pride in following recipes with precision. However, the aftermath of the stroke significantly impaired my culinary abilities, often leading to unsatisfactory and sometimes disastrous meal preparations.

Hello Fresh, widely recognized for its convenience in eliminating the hassle of recipe hunting and ensuring the availability of ingredients, has become more than just a food delivery service for me. It has transformed into an unexpected tool for rehabilitation and skill development. Initially, I appreciated Hello Fresh’s straightforward recipe format and the convenience of having all the necessary ingredients. This combination effectively removed two significant barriers to successful cooking: complex instructions and the frequent absence of ingredients.

But there’s more to it. As I continued using Hello Fresh, I noticed a gradual return to my previous cooking abilities. The easy-to-follow nature of their recipes played a crucial role in this. Familiarizing myself with recipe formats and rhythms has made cooking easier, which boosted my confidence in my culinary skills.

This experience has led me to view Hello Fresh from a different perspective. It’s not just a service that provides meal kits; it’s a culinary training program in disguise. For someone like me, recovering from a stroke and striving to regain lost skills, Hello Fresh has been unexpectedly beneficial. It’s more than just the convenience of prepared ingredients and selected recipes; it’s about restoring a skill that was once a source of pride.

I now recommend Hello Fresh not only for its evident benefits of convenience and taste but also as a tool for anyone looking to improve or regain their cooking skills. It has been a significant part of my journey to reclaim a part of my life that I thought was lost after my stroke. Each meal prepared is a step forward in my recovery, a testament to the role of cooking in healing and personal growth. Hello Fresh, in my experience, has proven to be an ally in this journey, making it an integral part of my culinary and individual rehabilitation.

Running Into Inspiration: How My Exercise Routine Became a Source of Motivation for Others

December 5, 2023

Hello Dear Readers,

Yesterday’s run was more than just a typical exercise session; it became a moment of unexpected introspection and community connection. While jogging, I encountered a neighbor’s father who felt compelled to introduce himself and inquire about my running habits. As we chatted, he casually mentioned that my dedication to running inspired him. This brief exchange, filled with friendly small talk and a promise to greet me by name in the future, left a lasting impression as I continued my run.

This wasn’t the first time someone had expressed how my regular exercise routine had inspired them. It’s the second such instance, and I must confess that I grapple with a feeling akin to imposter syndrome each time it happens. Despite the sincerity in their words, I find myself questioning the validity of their admiration. I attribute their praise partly to politeness and curiosity. Still, there’s a growing realization that there might be more.

In these moments of doubt, I ponder the depth of my actions’ impact on others. The thought of being someone’s inspiration, especially in a domain as personal and challenging as fitness, is humbling and daunting. It’s a shallow sensation, this doubt, yet it’s persistent. It’s easy to dismiss compliments as mere niceties. Still, the repeated occurrence of such incidents leads me to confront a new reality.

The responsibility of being an inspiration, even if unintended, is something I had yet to anticipate when I started my fitness journey. My initial goals were personal – to improve my health and well-being. However, the interactions with my neighbor’s father and others have shed light on a broader impact. It’s not just about the physical transformation or the discipline of a regular exercise routine. It’s about the ripple effect of one’s actions on the community.

Facing this reality, I’m contemplating how to harness this influence positively. While directing them to this blog to read about my experiences and thoughts is an option, there’s potential for a more productive engagement. Sharing more about the challenges and triumphs of my fitness journey could provide a more relatable and motivating narrative for others. Creating a space for shared experiences and tips could foster a supportive community around fitness and well-being.

In conclusion, the fitness journey is often viewed as a solitary endeavor focused on personal goals and self-improvement. However, my experiences have shown me that it can transcend individual boundaries. Our actions, no matter how small or routine they seem, can inspire and motivate those around us. This realization is a testament to the power of community and a call to embrace the unexpected roles we may find ourselves in. As I continue my running and fitness journey, I remain open to the possibilities and responsibilities that come with being an unintended source of inspiration.

A Twist in Our Pizza Day: Embracing Change and Finding Solutions

Written: Nov 26, 2023

Hello,

Today marks another one of our cherished pizza days. However, a little twist cropped up last night. Surprisingly, I realized we had run out of chicken, typically a star topping on our pizza. This prompted a quick brainstorming session to think of suitable alternatives. By morning, I had a few ideas to discuss with my wife. We eventually settled on trying out turkey as a replacement for the day. It might be even more delightful than our usual chicken topping. This unexpected turn of events stems mainly from a recent shift in our regular meal routine.

Before our subscription with Hello Fresh, we regularly received our meat supplies from a service known as Butcherbox. However, since we started our journey with Hello Fresh, we’ve put our Butcherbox orders on hold. Hello Fresh conveniently includes the necessary meats in their recipe deliveries, which seemed like a perfect arrangement. Additionally, an impromptu grocery run for eggs, essential for the pumpkin pie we were making, resulted in us missing our usual shopping trip yesterday. While unlikely to happen often, this series of events has taught me an important lesson: to keep a closer watch on our chicken stock.

My wife often shares pearls of wisdom with me, one of which is particularly relevant in this scenario. She advises that when presenting a problem, it’s beneficial to have potential solutions ready. This advice initially meant for employees communicating with supervisors, proved invaluable last night. Discovering the absence of chicken, I quickly suggested a few alternatives to my wife. This approach, I’ve realized, is wider than workplace interactions. It’s a versatile strategy that can be applied in various aspects.

A Journey in Japanese: Day 365 and Counting

Today marks my 365th day of dedicated engagement with my Japanese language learning app. As I reflect on this journey, it’s clear that while my writing and reading Japanese abilities are still in their infancy, I have made notable strides in listening and speaking. Forming phrases in Japanese presents a challenge; I often find myself constructing sentences in English first and then laboriously translating them, utilizing my growing repository of memorized Japanese phrases.

The Japanese language is nothing short of intriguing. Its grammatical structure vastly differs from the Indo-European languages I have previously studied, presenting a fascinating challenge. I used to marvel at my wife’s proficiency in English, especially her adept use of “who” and “whom” – a feat that eludes many native speakers. However, my foray into Japanese has shed light on the underlying reasons for her linguistic precision. Japanese employs specific particles to denote the grammatical role of words. Unlike English, which heavily depends on word order to identify subjects and objects in sentences, Japanese simplifies this by using distinct particles for each. This system necessitates a keen understanding of sentence structure and is integral to spoken and written Japanese.

Looking ahead, I have set a goal for the next year to delve deeper into the Japanese writing system, starting with Hiragana. Mastering Hiragana is the first step towards gaining proficiency in the language’s script, which will eventually pave the way for me to tackle Kanji. I’m under no illusion about the complexity of Kanji, recognizing it as a more daunting aspect of the language. But, as with every step of this linguistic journey, I am ready to embrace the challenge with enthusiasm and determination. My experience so far has been a testament to the joys and challenges of language learning. I am excited to see where this path will lead me in the realm of bilingualism and cultural understanding.

The Fine Line Between Stubbornness and Determination: A Personal Reflection

Hello Dear Readers,

In the intricate tapestry of language, certain traits appear deceptively similar. Yet, the context and magnitude of these characteristics can drastically alter their interpretation and reception. A fascinating example of this linguistic phenomenon is the contrast between ‘stubbornness’ and ‘determination.’ While stubbornness is often cast in a negative light, determination is celebrated as a virtue. According to the Oxford Dictionary, ‘stubborn’ implies a persistent unwillingness to change one’s opinion or attitude, whereas ‘determination’ is a steadfast firmness of purpose. Superficially, these descriptions mirror each other, but the fundamental divergence emerges from the circumstances in which these traits are displayed.

In an introspective exercise, I pondered whether it’s feasible to frame ‘stubbornness’ in a positive context, devoid of its typical negative connotations. Let me share a personal anecdote to illustrate this point:

**

Today, I found myself battling fatigue. The consequence of a late night and an unwavering commitment to my usual waking hour was that I struggled to remain alert and fulfill my daily responsibilities. Moreover, maintaining a civil and polite demeanor, which becomes increasingly challenging when I’m tired, was also on my agenda. I hoped that coffee would be my ally, providing enough energy to not only endure my 10k run and household chores like vacuuming but also to tackle the remainder of my to-do list. Throughout this ordeal, I constantly reminded myself of the promises made to myself and my wife, relying heavily on what I call my ‘native stubbornness’ to persevere.

**

This narrative is not a fabricated scenario but an accurate account of my day. The exercise of playing with words is indeed intriguing. It demonstrates how the perception of a trait like stubbornness can be transformed through the lens of personal commitment and the pursuit of goals. In this context, my ‘stubbornness’ transforms into a source of strength, a testament to my resolve to overcome lethargy and fulfill my obligations.

This exploration reveals the subtle yet profound differences in how we interpret and use words based on their context. Depending on the situation and the speaker’s perspective, the same behavior can be labeled as stubbornness or determination. In my case, stubbornness, usually perceived negatively, becomes a positive force driving me to adhere to my commitments despite physical exhaustion and mental fatigue.

In conclusion, the distinction between stubbornness and determination is more nuanced than it appears. It’s a matter of perspective, context, and the underlying intention behind the behavior. By reframing our understanding of these traits, we can appreciate the full spectrum of human characteristics and their role in our personal and professional lives. This realization not only enriches our understanding of language but also empowers us to recognize and harness these traits in ourselves and others for positive outcomes.

Audiobooks: A Lifeline and a Waiting Game

November 26, 2023

Deaar Reader,

A delightful notification popped up on my phone this morning, brightening my day. Exciting news is on the horizon: a fresh Brandon Sanderson audiobook is set to grace Audible’s shelves later this month.

Following a brain stroke, audiobooks have become an indispensable part of my life. The stroke resulted in double vision, transforming the simple joy of reading into a daunting task. Once an avid reader, I now rely on audiobooks to indulge my passion for literature.

It was my wife who first introduced me to the world of audiobooks. Initially, she thought they’d be a perfect companion for her during routine, undemanding tasks. However, she soon realized that her preference lay in the tactile experience of reading a traditional book instead of listening to one.

Nevertheless, there needs to be more snags when it comes to audiobooks. Often, their release needs to catch up to the print version. At times, specific titles don’t even make it to audiobook format, which has been the case with some of Brandon Sanderson’s works, making me uneasy that they might never be available in audio form. Although they might exist on other platforms, I have yet to find the right one.

“Tres of the Emerald Sea” by Brandon Sanderson is a prime example.

I haven’t extensively searched other platforms, hoping they will eventually appear on Audible. That is why announcing a new audiobook release is even more thrilling, as it could signal the arrival of his other elusive titles.

In the meantime, patience is the virtue I aim to embrace. And what a delightful coincidence it is that the release of this new book coincides with our wedding anniversary. It’s as if Brandon Sanderson himself is bestowing a thoughtful gift upon us. How considerate of him, indeed.

Navigating Temperature Control Challenges After a Stroke: A Personal Journey

In the wake of my husband’s stroke, we faced a myriad of challenges, one of which was his sudden struggle with body temperature regulation. This unexpected journey began when he suffered a brain stroke, leading to bleeding in the central part of his brain. Among the areas impacted was the hypothalamus, nestled just above the brainstem.

The hypothalamus plays a pivotal role in maintaining our body’s equilibrium, a state known as homeostasis. As the Cleveland Clinic outlines, this small but mighty part of the brain acts as a messenger, coordinating crucial functions such as body temperature, blood pressure, and even our moods and sleep patterns.

The initial three months post-stroke were particularly tough, and they’re periods my husband doesn’t recall. After removing his feeding tube, I took on the responsibility of feeding him, a slow and painstaking process due to his lack of motivation. His sense of time was skewed, necessitating a strict sleep schedule. Touch became a source of discomfort, like a knife’s edge against his skin. His world seemed devoid of the sensations that usually bring joy, like the warmth of a sunny day or the cool relief of a breeze.

In the following months, his perception of hot and cold became conflated. He would wear a robe in summer, feeling both hot and cold simultaneously. We discovered that applying pressure to his skin could sometimes trick his brain into not feeling cold, leading him to often wear a hooded shirt even in warm weather. Before his stroke, we seldom needed air conditioning or heating in our Portland home, but post-stroke, finding a comfortable temperature became a constant challenge.

As someone who isn’t a medical professional, my understanding is based on observation and reading. I’ve noticed the brain’s remarkable ability to compensate and heal after such trauma. Before his stroke, my husband never enjoyed running, but now, it’s an activity that seems to aid his recovery. Nearly a decade into his journey, his abilities have been significantly improved, such as being able to cook independently.

I’ve decided to share our story and his progress in a journal form, hoping it might offer a glimmer of hope to others in similar situations. Ten years ago, when he first experienced his stroke, I was desperate for information and support. Seeing his recovery now, I believe our experience might resonate with others searching for hope and understanding in the face of such life-changing events.

Lessons from Mistborn: The Ripple Effect of Our Actions

In my literary journey, I’ve stumbled across numerous tales that have left an indelible impact on me. Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series, in particular, has given me a profound insight pertinent to our daily lives: every action, no matter how small, carries consequences.

Throughout the Mistborn saga, a recurrent theme is how the characters’ survival hinges on understanding the repercussions of their actions. They’re not just told but demonstrated that each choice can alter the course of events, shaping the world around them. This motif, although set in a fantastical universe, carries weighty implications for us in our non-magical world.

In today’s vast and intricate global landscape, it’s tempting to think of individual actions as mere drops in an ocean, too insignificant to create any natural ripple. However, the Mistborn series is a poignant reminder that this isn’t the case. Just as tiny steps cumulatively lead us to our ultimate destination, our everyday decisions, interactions, and behaviors collectively shape our relationships, surroundings, and the broader tapestry of society.

I’ve often been asked why I delve so deeply into fiction, especially when the worlds described are far removed from reality. My answer? Stories have a unique way of embedding wisdom within us. While personal experiences undeniably teach us valuable lessons, there’s something about narratives that makes the learning more profound. They wrap knowledge in layers of emotion, adventure, and connection, making the messages palatable and deeply resonant.

Whenever I immerse myself in a book, I approach it as a treasure hunt. Each page turned is a step closer to unearthing a golden nugget of wisdom. Sometimes, this wisdom aligns with the author’s intended message; at other times, it’s a personal interpretation. But the beauty of literature is that it’s not always about deriving the “correct” lesson. Instead, it’s about extracting value, making each reading experience unique and personal.

To draw parallels, consider our actions as chapters in our life’s book. While one might feel that a solitary act or decision is inconsequential, when strung together, they form a narrative – one that affects not just us but the world at large. The Mistborn series amplifies this idea, urging readers to be conscious of their actions, as every move contributes to a larger storyline.

In conclusion, whether through personal experiences or the enchanting world of books, we must remember that we’re not isolated entities. Every action, word, or thought has a ripple effect. Sanderson’s Mistborn series is a compelling testament to this fact, reinforcing that even in a world teeming with billions, each individual has the power to effect change.

To everyone reading this, I urge you to be mindful of your actions. Recognize the influence you wield. And just as you would with a cherished book, extract lessons from your experiences, ensuring that every chapter you pen in your life’s story adds value to the world around you.

Learning from the Past: Beyond Proximate Causes

A well-known adage has been echoing since I wrapped up my listening session of Gibbon’s “The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire.” It says, “Those who don’t remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” My introduction to this phrase was through my father, who emphasized the significance of historical knowledge. While there’s undeniable wisdom in these words, they might unintentionally make some believe that merely by acquainting themselves with history, they are shielded from the blunders of bygone eras.

As a novice trying to grasp the vast expanse of history, I understand that it arms learners with tools to sidestep pitfalls that earlier generations faced. And it holds the potential to offer such insights. Yet, the challenge lies in the intricate web of choices that constitute most historical missteps. The popular way of teaching and interpreting history tends to spotlight the immediate causes, indirectly suggesting that dodging this final misstep ensures the prevention of the whole catastrophe. However, this is a simplification that might only sometimes hold true.

I’m led to believe that many errors take root in several phases before their tangible aftermath. This time gap between the origin and the outcome often makes it challenging to link the cause with its effect, rendering lessons from the past elusive.

When I introspect about my misjudgments, I endeavor to trace back to the very origin of the error. Merely stopping at the immediate cause feels like a superficial analysis. Taking the Roman Empire as an instance, it wasn’t an overnight phenomenon. Its foundations required centuries of planning, strategy, and decisions. Conversely, its decline wasn’t the outcome of a singular, catastrophic choice. Just as countless determinations paved the way for its establishment, a multitude of decisions, spanning across centuries, nudged it towards its eventual fall.

Understanding the sequence of events and the complex interplay of decisions is crucial to genuinely learning from history. The final misstep is just the tip of the iceberg; the actual bulk lies beneath the surface. By focusing only on the immediate causes, we might become complacent, thinking we’ve learned enough to avert historical repetitions.

In essence, the purpose of studying history is to avoid old pitfalls. But to do so effectively, it’s paramount to delve deep into the intricate tapestry of choices leading up to significant events. Remembering the past is the first step. Deciphering its multifaceted lessons is the journey. Let’s not just scratch the surface; let’s mine deep, for in the depths lie the natural treasures of wisdom.

Rediscovering The Wheel of Time and My Journey with Audiobooks

Growing up, I was deeply fascinated by the universe of science fiction and fantasy. One of the series that profoundly resonated with me during my high school years was Robert Jordan’s “Wheel of Time.” I recall the anticipation, the longing, and the frustration of waiting for each new installment to hit the shelves. As the rigors of University and graduate school consumed me, the lengthy intervals between releasing these books meant I gradually lost touch with the series.

Fast forward a decade, and a press release caught my eye – the series was completed by another author, Brandon Sanderson. Having lost track of where I’d left off, I embarked on a nostalgic journey, starting from the first book, devouring the series within weeks. This was my introduction to Sanderson, and his rendition of the series left an indelible mark on me, making his name hard to forget.

Then came Amazon’s announcement of adapting the ‘Wheel of Time’ into a show. An urge to revisit the books struck, but several relocations had scattered my collection. Instead, I turned to audiobooks and, to my surprise, found them to be an even more immersive experience. I was hooked. The entire series played countless times in the backdrop of my daily life, even subtly accompanying me as I pen down thoughts like this one. There’s a particular fondness I hold for the books penned by Sanderson. Whether it’s his distinctive writing style or the crescendo, the storyline was approaching. The 12th book always beckons me with unmatched enthusiasm.

Coincidentally, years later, Sanderson’s name resurfaced in an unexpected arena – a ‘Magic The Gathering’ video. Intrigued, I delved deeper into his bibliography. I ventured into the “Mistborn” series, followed by the “Stormlight Archives.” Both series were enchanting, and as I journeyed with the characters through their challenges, I drew several life lessons.

Among these lessons, one stood out – the significance of persisting, of taking the next step. No matter the distance traversed, the journey is over once it truly is. And the decision to move forward, to tread the next mile, plays a pivotal role in defining us.

In essence, my journey with the “Wheel of Time” series and audiobooks has been more than just a literary adventure. It’s been a lesson in rediscovery, persistence, and the simple joy of stories that leave a lasting impact.
