Yesterday presented itself as one of those frustrating days that tested my patience to the fullest. The sky opened early in the morning, drenching everything in sight, and the rain didn’t let up for the entire day. There I was, glancing over my to-do list, hoping for even the briefest pause in the downpour to mow the lawn—no such luck. It seemed the weather was conspiring against me, keeping me from ticking off the chores that required being outdoors.

In moments like these, I’m reminded of a strategy my wife often employs: not worrying about what we cannot control. So, with a resigned sigh, I acknowledged the weather’s veto on my plans and decided to reorganize my week. It’s not the end of the world, after all. The forecast promises clearer skies on Thursday, so I’ve earmarked that day to catch up on my lawn mowing, aiming to compensate for last week’s unfinished business.

Tomorrow, however, remains untouched by these alterations as it is one of my regular gaming days—an appointment with friends that I’m keen to keep. This means I’ll need to be efficient with my time on Thursday to ensure everything is squared away.

Adapting to uncontrollable circumstances like the weather can be quite a challenge. It used to be that such disruptions would either send me into a bout of frustration or cause me to abandon my plans altogether. However, influenced by my wife’s calm demeanor and practical mindset, I’ve learned how to adjust and reshape my plans where possible.

So, what does one do on a day utterly disrupted by bad weather? The answer lies in focusing on what can be managed. It meant rescheduling outdoor tasks and finding other productive ways to use my indoor time effectively. By not dwelling on the disruptions and planning around them, I find that not only am I able to maintain my productivity, but I also preserve my peace of mind.

This approach isn’t just about avoiding frustration. It’s about harnessing the situation and maximizing what is within our control. Whether it’s rearranging tasks, shifting priorities, or simply taking a moment to pause and regroup, the ability to adapt is a powerful skill in our everyday lives. It keeps us moving forward, even when the weather—or life itself—doesn’t seem to be on our side.

Sometimes, a day unfolds that’s just perfect for a run. That was the case yesterday when I tweaked my running routine a bit. I shortened the alert intervals to every quarter kilometer and ambitiously slashed my target pace by 10 seconds. Admittedly, I didn’t quite hit the new pace mark, but I still managed to outdo my speed from last week, which felt like a victory in itself. The frequent updates from my phone were surprisingly effective at keeping me motivated throughout.

I’ve recently set a new personal goal: I want to run a 5K faster than last year. My focus was merely on accumulating miles for a long time, so this shift toward speed has introduced some fresh challenges into my routine. It’s been tough, especially since I’ve struggled to consistently monitor my pace mid-run. However, a doctor of mine recommended the Asics running app, which has been a game changer.

The app is straightforward yet powerful. It nudges me every quarter kilometer if I need to catch up to my desired speed. This regular prompting has proven incredibly beneficial; it’s like having a personal coach in my ear, pushing me to dig deeper and pick up the pace. This kind of persistent encouragement will make all the difference as I work towards my goal.

I’m genuinely excited about this app’s potential to transform my running. As I continue using it, I’m eager to see how much faster I can get by the year’s end. Tennessee’s weather has been showing off its unpredictable side, swiftly transitioning from the cold that calls for gloves to the warmth that warrants shorts. This rapid change signals a move towards what’s likely to be an intensely hot period soon. It’s a fluctuation reminiscent of mountain climates, where the weather seems to dance on a whim. My musings today drift towards this erratic weather pattern and how it weaves into the fabric of our daily lives, particularly for those whose routines intersect with the great outdoors.

In my household, the weather dictates the pace. My wife opts for the cool embrace of early mornings for her runs, sidestepping the later heat. I, on the contrary, have a preference for running a bit later in the day, which means keeping a vigilant eye on the day’s weather forecast is paramount for me. This necessity to rise early without dawdling, especially on days earmarked for running, becomes even more pressing.

Adding another layer to this seasonal dance is the advent of Daylight Saving Time. This biannual clock adjustment, looming on the horizon, introduces its own set of challenges. My wife, susceptible to the shift, begins realigning her schedule about ten days in advance to soften the jolt to her circadian rhythm. She’s already easing into a new sleep schedule in anticipation, showcasing our small attempts to maintain harmony with time’s ebb and flow.

Despite several snowy days, Tennessee has been basking in unexpected warmth. After a brief hiatus of a few weeks, I finally laced up my running shoes again for a refreshing 10k run. This wasn’t just any run but my inaugural journey since I integrated a new virtual running companion into my routine—Runkeeper. Recommended by my nephrologist, the app was developed by Asics. Runkeeper has quickly proven to be an invaluable addition to my training arsenal, bringing a new level of engagement to my runs.

One of the standout features that I’ve come to appreciate about Runkeeper is its ability to provide me with audio cues regarding my pace at every half-kilometer mark. This small but significant detail has been a game-changer, encouraging me to dig deeper and push my limits further with each stride. The thought of tweaking the settings to receive these updates every quarter kilometer has crossed my mind. While I’m slightly wary of the potential annoyance from an increased frequency of alerts, curiosity is nudging me towards trying it to see how it might intensify my motivation.

As the year began, I embarked on a fitness journey, meticulously crafting an exercise regimen to meet my annual objectives. This endeavor progressed smoothly until an unexpected setback occurred—I sustained an injury during my workouts. This incident led me to realize that perhaps my physique had yet to adapt to the demands of my newly formulated workout plan. Upon resuming my entire exercise routine, I recognized the necessity to reassess and adjust the intensity of my schedule to better accommodate my current physical capabilities.

The essence of achieving any goal lies in creating a memorable and trackable strategy. This is a lesson I frequently impart to my students at the university. Despite its apparent simplicity, it’s astonishing how often this principle is overlooked, resulting in many falling short of their ambitions. When I applied this methodology to my fitness regimen, the tangible outcomes began to manifest, prompting a thorough evaluation of my previous efforts and outcomes.

Reflecting on my journey, it became evident that my earlier injury likely resulted from overly ambitious increments in the weights I used for curls. After conducting thorough research and contemplation, I devised a more calculated approach to increasing weights. I resolved that only when I could complete 25 repetitions of a curl with a given weight without interruption would I consider advancing to a heavier weight. Conversely, I would reduce the weight if I struggled to perform at least 15 curls. My daily target would be between 20 to 25 repetitions, with Saturdays designated as the day to assess whether I was prepared to elevate the intensity of my workout.

This revised strategy serves dual purposes. Firstly, it ensures that I do not prematurely escalate the difficulty of my exercises, thereby mitigating the risk of injury. Secondly, it provides a structured framework to consistently monitor my progress and adjust as needed. This balanced approach encourages gradual improvement while safeguarding against the pitfalls of overexertion. The actual test of this method’s efficacy will be observed in the coming months as I continue to navigate the challenges and triumphs of my fitness journey.

In retrospect, this experience underscores the importance of listening to one’s body and acknowledging the signals it provides. The journey toward fitness and health is uniquely personal, requiring a bespoke approach considering individual capabilities, limitations, and aspirations. By adopting a more reflective and measured stance towards exercise, I am hopeful that I will achieve my fitness goals and foster a sustainable and enjoyable relationship with physical activity.

Exploring the Calm: A 60-Day Meditation Journey

Recently, I decided to give meditation another try. The main reason? I was curious about its effects. I’ll be honest—meditation has always been a challenge for me. Actually, this is the second time I’ve tried this project. It’s tough to sit still in one spot without doing something productive. For instance, I can’t just watch a movie; I must take notes and analyze the plot to enjoy it.

Despite knowing some benefits of meditation, I’ve been reluctant to dedicate time to it. This time, I’ve committed to a 30-day trial of consistent meditation, followed by 30 days of analyzing my experiences—a total of 60 days.

Contrary to my feelings toward meditation, meditation offers numerous benefits for the mind and body. According to Sharma (2015), it helps mentally and physiologically by lowering cortisol levels. Cortisol is known as the stress hormone, and high levels can lead to various adult health issues. Meditation also boosts blood flow to brain areas involved in cognitive processes and emotion regulation (Jumah & Dossani, 2024). I put some of the benefits I found from the Journal written by Sharma:

Mental Benefits: Stress deduction, Decreased Anxiety, Decreased  Depression, Reduction in Pain, Improved Memory, Increased Efficiency

Physiological Efficiency: blood pressure, Heart rate, lactate, Cortisol, epinephrine, metabolism, breathing pattern, oxygen utilization, carbon dioxide elimination, increased melatonin, dehydroepiandrosterone surface, skin resistance, blood flow to the brain.

When I meditate, my mind tends to race with thoughts, mainly my to-do list. It was so overwhelming at first that I started to meditate right after my morning routine. After my run, I jot down everything I need to do on a few pages of notes, which helps to clear my mind for meditation. I still found meditation to be challenging. I tried to focus on my breathing. Focusing solely on my breathing still didn’t help, so I began visualizing beautiful scenes from places I’ve visited, sometimes even imagining muses dancing in these settings. This has allowed me to keep distracting thoughts at bay for at least 20 minutes.

Over the next 60 days, I plan to learn more about meditation. I don’t know how this journey will unfold or if I’m practicing meditation correctly. But experiencing what it’s like to be in tune with my body is reason enough for me to undertake this project.

Navigating an Unconventional Week: From Medical Visits to Culinary Delights

This week unfolds before me, not as a blank slate waiting to be filled with routine tasks but as a canvas dotted with unusual commitments and delightful responsibilities. It’s shaping up to be a week unlike any other, marked by atypical events that promise to keep me busy and engaged in various activities.

Kicking off my week is a visit to my nephrologist, nestled in the heart of downtown Nashville. With my wife immersed in the crucial year-end audit at work, her availability to drive me to my appointment is understandably compromised. Hence, I find myself relying on Uber for transportation—not just for a single trip but for a round trip, doubling my travel requirements and adding a layer of complexity to my schedule.

Amidst these medical appointments, my week takes a delightful turn towards the oven. I’ve committed to not one but two baking projects. The first is a labor of love for my sister, whose birthday celebration awaits. At her request, I’ve agreed to bake a birthday cake, a task I embrace with enthusiasm. The joy of contributing to her special day with a homemade cake is a highlight of my week. Following closely on the heels of this task is another baking endeavor. A pumpkin pie is on the menu this time, destined for my wife’s work potluck. Among her colleagues are individuals from Japan who have yet to experience this quintessential American dessert. It’s an opportunity for me to introduce them to the flavors of pumpkin pie, adding a cultural exchange to my week’s accomplishments.

What makes this week particularly interesting is the spacing of these tasks. They’re scattered throughout the week so that they seem manageable despite their atypical nature. Each day brings its own focus, allowing me to dedicate time and energy to each task without feeling overwhelmed. However, this does mean that my usual leisure time will be compromised. Instead of indulging in moments of relaxation, I’ll need to channel my energy towards accomplishing these tasks. It’s a small sacrifice, but one that promises to bring a sense of fulfillment and joy, both to myself and to those around me.

In essence, this week is a testament to the unpredictable nature of life. It’s a reminder that even amid our daily routines, we can find ourselves facing a series of unique challenges and opportunities. Whether navigating healthcare needs, celebrating family milestones, or sharing culinary traditions, each task adds color and texture to the tapestry of our lives. As I move through this week, I am reminded of the importance of embracing each moment, each task, with a sense of purpose and a heart full of enthusiasm.

Making Peace with Time Changes: A New Routine

In my 20s, I always found the days we had to change our clocks for daylight saving time to be some of the most challenging days of the year. Some people said they liked the spring-forward or fall-back changes, but they were equally difficult for me. Unless I moved somewhere like Arizona, where they keep the time the same, I realized I’d have to deal with this uncomfortable shift twice a year, every year. I decided to shake things up and change my routine.

I’ve always been a night owl, but I forced myself to start my days early to get more done. Mondays are the only days I physically go to work, and I dread the commute, mainly because I drive a manual car. Traffic eats into my valuable time. Luckily, my office is only a 15-minute drive from home if I leave early enough to dodge the traffic jams, and my workday starts at 7 am. I decided to use the extra time I saved by working early on improving something in my life.

Then, we moved to Tennessee from Canada, and my routine faced a new challenge. Back in Canada, I’d run after work, but it’s way too hot in Tennessee, especially in the summer. Running in the extreme heat wasn’t appealing, but it still beat the alternative of running in the snow or ice for months. I had to tweak my schedule to fit the local weather patterns.

A survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine showed that about 63% of Americans would rather not deal with the time change, and 55% feel tired because of it (John Hopkins, 2023). I noticed in my early 20s that my productivity took a hit right after we changed the time, and my running pace slowed down on the days immediately following the time changes. This issue gets worse every year. It might be due to the time changes throwing off my body’s internal clock.

In response, I began shifting my schedule in my early 30s. This adjustment has worked, allowing me to maintain my natural rhythms despite the time changes. Instead of dreading these days, I’ve found ways to adapt and use them to my advantage. Changing my routine and adjusting to my new environment in Tennessee has helped me cope with the time change and improve my overall productivity and well-being.

A Day Out of Sync: Navigating Schedule Slip-Ups and Seasonal Shifts

From the moment I woke up, I knew something was off. My morning run, usually the first accomplishment of my day, was delayed, setting a domino effect in motion that threw my entire schedule into disarray. This hiccup directly resulted from my decision to burn the midnight oil, leading to an inevitable oversleeping and a disrupted day ahead. To attempt a semblance of normalcy, I considered halving my usual 10k run to a 5k, hoping to claw back some time. It’s a bummer, to say the least.

Reflecting on the cause of today’s scheduling mishap is crucial for me. I aim to understand what went wrong to avoid repeating the same errors. The changing seasons are a significant factor contributing to my delayed start and overall time mismanagement. 

Recently, we’ve experienced a spell of warm, rainy days, making the initiation of my runs more challenging than usual. Motivation is complex when the weather acts as a deterrent. However, I recognize that this is but a temporary phase. Soon, the weather will settle, and early morning runs will become essential to beat the heat.

My delay in hitting the sack last night also played a pivotal role in today’s delayed start. In an unusual move, I opted out of my regular melatonin dose, thinking it unnecessary given the late hour and my level of fatigue. My rationale was that my body wouldn’t have ample time to process the supplement before my wake-up, potentially leaving me groggier than if I’d skipped it. While this decision seemed logical then, it didn’t sufficiently mitigate the effects of my late-night.

This experience has led me to a critical conclusion: maintaining a consistent sleep schedule is integral to the smooth flow of my day. No matter how minor they seem at the moment, Deviations can lead to a ripple effect, disrupting my routine and productivity. As I navigate through these seasonal adjustments and try to balance my health and productivity, today serves as a reminder of the delicate interplay between our plans and the realities we face. It’s a lesson in adaptability, self-awareness, and the constant pursuit of balance amidst life’s inevitable shifts.

Navigating Obstacles on the Path to Fitness Goals

Embarking on a journey toward a fitness goal can often feel like setting sail into a storm. No matter the depth of commitment or the precision of planning, unforeseen challenges emerge, ready to test our resolve. This has been my reality, particularly in enhancing my physical strength through a rigorous muscle exercise regimen.

It’s been over a year since I initiated this quest, beginning with pull-ups before progressively integrating core muscle exercises into my routine. My dedication mirrored my commitment to running, hardly ever missing a day unless circumstances made accessing my exercise equipment utterly impossible.

At the dawn of this year, I laid out a meticulous exercise plan, pledging unwavering allegiance to it. This commitment bore fruit, as only a day went by with me adhering to my regimen. However, recent days have seen wavering in this steadfastness, prompting me to reconsider aspects of my training program.

The catalyst for this reevaluation has been an injury, a stark reminder of the physical toll that such a regimen can exact. A few weeks ago, in my zeal, I overstrained a muscle, resulting in lingering pain that has scarcely improved. Initially, I attempted to soldier on, moderating the intensity of my workouts. Yet, the mere act of performing a single dip would reignite the pain, leading me to the realization that continuing my exercises might do more harm than good.

In response to this setback, I’ve crafted a new strategy to navigate this period of uncertainty. Until the pain subsides completely, I’ve forego curls and dips, exacerbating my discomfort. Nevertheless, I remain optimistic about continuing with pull-ups, pullovers, push-ups, and planks. I hope this adaptation will continue my progress.

This temporary suspension of specific exercises forces me to confront the possibility of recalibrating the pace at which I increase weights and repetitions. The injury suggests that my body requires more than a week to sufficiently recover and strengthen before taking on more significant challenges.

Life, in its unpredictability, mirrors this journey. Altering my plan does not signify defeat but rather an adaptive strategy to ensure I continue moving toward my objectives, albeit at a modified pace. Such is the nature of pursuing any goal: it demands flexibility, resilience, and the wisdom to recognize when to push forward and step back for long-term success.

This experience underscores a fundamental truth in pursuing fitness or any personal endeavor: the path to achievement is seldom linear. Obstacles, be they injuries or other unforeseen challenges, are not roadblocks but detours necessitating patience, adaptability, and perseverance. As I navigate this hiccup in my fitness journey, the lesson is clear – resilience in the face of adversity is about enduring and evolving in response to the challenges we encounter.
